Where to Put Your Router (and Where Never To)

Most routers end up wherever the cable happens to reach — a low shelf, a corner, a media cabinet — and that placement alone can cost more range than any setting in the admin panel. This guide covers what actually matters about where a router sits, and just as importantly, what doesn’t.
Why the floor and the corner are the two worst choices
Radio signal loses strength as an inverse-square of distance — it’s not decoration, it means the first metre away from the antenna costs you far more signal than the tenth metre does, because that first metre is where the energy is still spreading out fastest. A router on the floor puts half of its coverage sphere straight into the floor and whatever’s below it — wasted before it ever reaches a room. A router jammed into a corner does the same thing sideways: half its potential coverage area is spent on outside walls and the outdoors, rather than reaching further into the house. Both spots take a router that could be covering the whole home and use it to cover half of it, at best.
Height, and why it matters more than people think
The ceiling-height instinct — mount it high — is broadly right, and the reason is worth knowing: height gets a router’s signal above furniture, above the countertop, above the couch back, and above most of the everyday clutter that would otherwise be in its direct line of sight to the rest of the house. A router at roughly chest height or above, on an open shelf rather than the floor, routinely covers noticeably more usable area than the identical router at ankle height in the same room — same hardware, same walls, meaningfully different result, purely from what’s in the way.
The five things in your house that eat 2.4 GHz
A handful of ordinary household items sit close to WiFi’s frequencies or actively interfere with the 2.4 GHz band specifically: a microwave oven, whose leakage sits near the top of the 2.4 GHz band while it is running — not a mild dip, a real, if temporary, source of interference on whatever channel overlaps it; cordless phones on the 2.4 GHz band, now less common but still out there; Bluetooth devices in large numbers; baby monitors on the same band; and other WiFi networks nearby competing for the same limited set of non-overlapping channels. None of this is a reason to panic about any one device, but it’s a reason not to put the router directly next to the kitchen, and a reason 5 GHz, where almost none of this lives, is worth using for anything that needs to be reliable.
Antennas: what orientation actually does
Antenna polarization is real, and “just point them all straight up” is the wrong universal answer, especially in a two-storey house. A vertically-oriented antenna radiates most strongly in a flat, horizontal plane around itself — great for spreading signal across a single floor, much weaker for reaching straight up or down to a different level. A router serving two floors from one location genuinely benefits from angling one antenna away from vertical, trading a little same-floor range for real coverage reaching the other level. There is no universally correct angle; there’s a single-floor answer (mostly vertical) and a multi-floor answer (a mix), and it’s worth testing both rather than assuming.
What placement does not do
To be direct about what this is not: no amount of repositioning “boosts” a signal beyond what the hardware can produce — there’s no placement trick that adds range a router doesn’t physically have. What repositioning actually does is stop wasting the range it already has on a floor, a corner, or a metal cabinet door instead of the rooms that need it. A router hidden inside a closed media cabinet is, functionally, a router placed behind a metal grille: the cabinet’s hardware — hinges, shielding, sometimes a metal back panel — attenuates signal the same way a wall would, on top of whatever the cabinet door itself costs. An open shelf a few feet away from that same cabinet, other things equal, will usually outperform it.
A few more placement habits worth having
Keep the router away from large reflective or dense surfaces even beyond the media-cabinet case above — a fish tank, a large mirror, a stone or brick fireplace surround directly in front of the antennas all cost real signal for the same underlying reason a wall does, just less obviously, because nobody thinks of a fish tank as an RF obstacle until they’ve placed a router twelve inches from one. An open, central location, away from large appliances and dense furniture, beats a technically-more-central spot that happens to be boxed in.
It’s also worth resisting the urge to place a router purely by where the internet gets in. A cable modem’s arrival point is wherever the installer happened to run it, not necessarily a good WiFi location, and a router doesn’t have to sit directly on top of the modem — a short Ethernet cable from modem to router, with the router itself moved to a better-centered, higher, more open spot, is a small, one-time piece of work that often does more for coverage than any setting change ever will.
Testing a new position properly
A single signal-bar glance right after moving the router tells you almost nothing reliable — client devices cache their last-known signal estimate for a few seconds and take a moment to settle on the new reality. Give a new position at least a minute before judging it, test from the actual rooms that were weak before (not just the room the router is in), and compare the same measurement — this site’s Coverage Mapper, or a consistent phone-based signal reading — from the same spots, before and after. A placement change that isn’t reproducible on a second test isn’t a real improvement; run it twice before you trust it, and if the walls and floor plan themselves are the limiting factor rather than the router’s position within them, that’s a different, complementary question the simulator can also answer by testing a few candidate spots against your actual floor plan before you move anything by hand.
